CHAPTER 2

New Sunshine Morning

26 June 2017

Lukas Minski watched as the door swung outwards, slowly but steadily.

His heart felt like it was going ten to the dozen as he stepped through the doorway – it was his first time, and he was determined to enjoy it, fear and everything.

Because what he was doing was dangerous. No two ways about that. Each step was potentially lethal – a misstep here, a trip there, anything could kill him.

There were more things that could kill him in a square metre than could save him – something drilled into him from the earliest days in training. Not a nice thought, but one that he’d never forgotten. After all, no one wanted a repeat of what had happened to Carlos.

As he took a few steps forward, he could see the buggy parked ahead, and a group of three guys standing around, waiting for him.

In his hand, he carried his red toolbox – everything he needed to justify what he was doing was in there.

He eventually made it to the buggy and could see straight away what the problem was – one of the wheels had hit a rock and twisted, shearing the rear axel.

‘That’s a big job,’ he explained to the guys.

‘Really? I hadn’t noticed,’ said the American. The driver, Lukas knew. Arrogant man, but good at his job. He was an architect and was responsible for what were currently referred to as “the lower levels”, usually said in a tone of voice that suggested they were somehow scary and threatening. They weren’t. They were exactly what they said – lower levels. Architects always liked to exaggerate their own importance.

‘What speed were you to be doing?’

‘Who cares,’ said one of the others. That was the UNIT man – he wore sergeant stripes on the arm of his spacesuit. Lukas tried to remember his name without success. ‘Can you fix it?’

‘Yes sir, but it is taking me up to maybe a couple of hours - I’m new to this. You as well to go back in and wait, yes?’

The three men looked in Lukas’ direction – he could tell from their limited body language that they weren’t happy, but there was nothing that could be done. If they’d driven the buggy less recklessly, they wouldn’t have this problem, would they?

Three of them walked off immediately, but one hung back.

‘You going to be all right out here alone?’ he asked Lukas in an English accent. ‘Your first week, yeah?’

Lukas said he’d be fine, and held his toolbox up carefully. ‘My first job actually out here,’ he said proudly. ‘This toolbox, it was a gift from Darya, my wife. New tools for a new career.’

‘New career, Mr…?’

‘Minski. Lukas Minski.’ Lukas said. ‘I work in the UNIT museums, in Georgia, lots of treasures and pictures. Very pretty, but often sad stories. The museum, it was full of things that it shouldn’t have, things not originally theirs,’ he said. Then he coughed, as if realising he was rambling on too much. ‘But I grow bored, sat all day, watching fat, rich people stare at things they not understand.
